Propolis
What Is It
Propolis—often called “bee glue”—is a resinous substance bees create from tree sap and botanical resins. Inside the hive, it serves as a structural sealant and protective layer, reinforcing the colony’s defenses and maintaining internal stability.
It is complex by nature. Depending on region and season, propolis can contain hundreds of naturally occurring compounds, including polyphenols and flavonoids—plant-derived antioxidants that give it its depth, color, and distinctive aroma.
Unlike honey or wax, propolis is not soft or sweet. It is dark, resinous, and intensely concentrated. Bees use it with intention.
So do we.
The Benefits
Propolis is valued for its naturally protective composition. Rich in plant-derived polyphenols and flavonoids, it offers antioxidant support that helps the body and skin contend with everyday environmental stress.
Topically, propolis is often used in targeted applications — on areas that feel irritated, vulnerable, or slow to recover. Its resinous character allows it to adhere lightly to the surface, forming a subtle protective layer while lending a sense of fortified calm.
In traditional preparations, propolis has long been included in throat and oral care formulations. Many people turn to it during seasonal shifts for its soothing qualities, particularly in sprays, lozenges, or tinctures designed to comfort the mouth and throat.
Because of its concentrated nature, propolis is typically used in small amounts. A little goes a long way.
Why We Love It
At Cult of Bees, we turn to propolis for its potent, versatile, and time-honored healing properties, but we use it selectively due to its complex and powerful nature. Currently featured in our tincture, propolis delivers an intense, concentrated defense against skin and environmental stressors. Its richly antimicrobial and soothing qualities make it an exceptional ingredient when precision and impact are paramount.
Cult-Made. Uncompromising.
Our commitment to ethical harvesting practices ensures that propolis is gathered sustainably and responsibly—carefully removed from the hive without disturbing the bees or their work. Each batch is then tinctured to extract its full strength.
