Rough Patch | Beeswax Butter
Rough Patch is a biocompatible, oil-balanced barrier balm for active, exposed skin.
Use it wherever the body asks for extra attention: elbows after long days, heels after hikes, bug bites that linger, or dry patches that just won’t quit. Finished with essential oils of peppermint and cedarwood, it smells cool, clean, and quietly wild.
We begin with raw shea butter and our signature virgin beeswax, then enrich it with mango and cupuaçu butters for cushion and deep hydration. Blueberry seed oil adds antioxidant care, while arrowroot and white kaolin clay keep the finish balanced and smooth.
The Composition
Rough Patch is a beeswax butter made for the places that take the most wear: heels, feet, hands, and other areas where dryness, friction, and repeated use tend to accumulate.
Virgin beeswax gives the composition its protective character and persistence. Around it, we build with butters that soften and restore flexibility, oils that condition and support the skin barrier, and finely milled powders that keep such a rich composition comfortable to use.
Shea Butter
The generous softening base of Rough Patch. Shea brings richness and pliability to thick, dry skin while tempering the natural firmness of the beeswax. It helps give the finished butter its substantial body and slow, satisfying melt.
Virgin Beeswax
Beeswax gives Rough Patch its protective character, structure, and staying power. It forms a breathable layer over the skin that helps slow moisture loss and remains present on areas exposed to repeated friction and wear. Much of the rest of the formula is built around it - softening it, enriching it, and refining the way it feels on the skin.
Mango Butter
Mango butter brings a smoother, lighter kind of emollience alongside the richer shea. It helps soften rough texture and adds slip and flexibility without making the butter feel unnecessarily heavy.
Cupuaçu Butter
Cupuaçu brings suppleness to the formula. Valued for its ability to bind water, it helps dry skin hold onto moisture while softening what could otherwise become a very dense, wax-forward composition. It is one of the ingredients that helps Rough Patch feel like a true butter rather than simply a protective salve.
Blueberry Seed Oil
Blueberry seed oil contributes essential fatty acids that complement the heavier butters and help support the lipid-rich barrier of dry, weathered skin. Its lighter character also brings a small measure of balance to an otherwise very rich composition.
Ucuuba Butter
Ucuuba is here primarily for the skin itself. Traditionally valued for dry, cracked, and stressed skin, its rich fatty-acid profile makes it especially suited to the overworked areas Rough Patch was created for. It adds deep conditioning and supports the skin’s protective barrier.
Arrowroot Powder
Arrowroot begins the work of refining all that richness. It helps reduce tackiness and excess surface oil, giving the butter a softer, drier finish and making it more practical for hands and feet that still need to get on with the day.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E serves the composition as well as the skin. It helps protect the oils and butters from oxidation while contributing additional conditioning to the finished butter.
Tamanu Oil
Tamanu is here for the kind of skin Rough Patch was created around: weathered, stressed, rubbed, and repeatedly put to work. Rich and deeply conditioning, it brings its distinctive character to the formula in a measured amount rather than overwhelming the rest of the composition.
White Kaolin Clay
Kaolin has a very different job from the butters and oils. It helps manage their richness. The clay absorbs some excess surface oil and gives Rough Patch a cleaner, softer finish, helping a dense beeswax butter feel comfortable and manageable.
Peppermint Essential Oil
Peppermint gives Rough Patch its immediate sense of freshness. Used sparingly, it cuts through the richness of the butters and waxes with a cool, bright aromatic note that feels especially at home in a composition made for tired feet and hardworking skin.
Cedarwood Essential Oil
Cedarwood grounds the peppermint with a dry, woody depth. It keeps the aromatic profile from becoming sharply minty and gives Rough Patch a quieter, earthier finish - more forest floor than foot cream.
Together, these ingredients create the balance Rough Patch needs: firm enough to stay where it is put, rich enough for genuinely dry skin, protective without feeling sealed over, and refined enough to use without leaving behind a mess.
It is a beeswax butter first - and every ingredient around that beeswax is there to make its protection softer, more useful, and better suited to the skin that needs it most.
Using Rough Patch
This balm has a firm, dense texture thanks to the Beeswax and Arrowroot Powder.
To use, gently scrape the balm with the back of your fingernail and collect a small amount. You don’t need much. Apply the balm to a small area of the affected skin and rub it in, allowing the warmth of your skin to melt it. Wait a moment for the balm to absorb naturally, then rub the area again to complete absorption and prevent any excess residue.
Questions Worth Asking
What makes Rough Patch different from a typical body butter?
Rough Patch was designed for areas of skin that experience repeated contact, friction, dryness, or exposure throughout the day. Rather than melting away immediately like a soft body butter, the composition settles into the skin more gradually — remaining present through movement while still feeling breathable and balanced.
Where on the body is Rough Patch meant to be used?
Anywhere the skin feels overworked, exposed, roughened, or repeatedly irritated by daily life. Elbows, heels, hands, bug bites, dry patches, knees, and areas exposed to cold weather or outdoor activity are all natural places to use it.
Does the balm feel greasy or overly heavy?
No. Although the composition is rich and protective, arrowroot and white kaolin clay help soften the finish so the balm settles into a more velvety, balanced texture rather than remaining slick on the skin.
Why use beeswax in a barrier balm?
Our virgin beeswax helps create a flexible, breathable layer that stays present on the skin while still allowing it to move naturally. Rather than sealing the skin off completely, it helps support moisture retention while remaining comfortable through daily wear.
Is Rough Patch intended for everyday use?
Yes. Rough Patch was composed as a daily-use barrier balm for skin shaped by movement, exposure, weather, work, and repeated contact with the world. It can be used occasionally for targeted support or kept close for regular daily tending.
Rough Patch is handcrafted and made to order, just for you.
Every ingredient is chosen with care - gentle, biocompatible, all-natural ones your skin actually recognizes and loves - with no parabens, no fillers, and no synthetics.
