Candelilla Wax
What Is It
Candelilla wax (Euphorbia cerifera) is a natural vegetable wax that coats the stems and leaves of a shrub native to the Chihuahuan Desert of northern Mexico and Texas. The plant - Euphorbia Cerifera - produces the wax as a survival strategy—its thin, glossy coating helps the shrub retain water and withstand the intense desert sun. Traditionally, local harvesters boil the stems and skim the wax that rises to the surface, a method that has been refined but still echoes its origins.
On a molecular level, candelilla wax is composed of about 50% hydrocarbons, along with esters, fatty acids, and resins. This unique composition makes it harder than beeswax but softer than carnauba wax, which is why it’s often used to fine-tune texture in natural formulations.
The Benefits
Candelilla’s appeal goes beyond being just “plant-based.” Some key properties include:
-
High melting point (around 68–73°C / 154–163°F): This gives lip balms a stable structure that won’t easily melt in a pocket, yet still softens beautifully on contact with skin.
-
Silky glide: Its fine crystalline structure produces a smooth, non-sticky feel.
-
Gloss factor: Unlike heavier waxes, candelilla imparts a subtle natural sheen, adding a polished look to lip care.
-
Vegan beeswax alternative: While similar in functionality, it’s entirely botanical, making it a go-to choice for fully plant-based formulations.
Did you know? Candelilla wax is so effective at creating a thin protective layer that it’s used to coat candies and pills, giving them both shine and moisture resistance.
Why We Love It
At Cult of Bees, we value ingredients that combine performance, integrity, and story. Candelilla Wax is a material born in one of the harshest environments on earth, where survival requires adaptation and resilience. By choosing candelilla wax, we’re not just formulating with plants—we’re carrying forward a piece of desert ingenuity into daily care.
Cult-Made. Uncompromising.
For our Plantasmic lip balm, candelilla wax provides the structure and protective barrier lips need, while keeping the formula entirely plant-based. Its high ester content gives the balm a smooth glide and stable finish, making every application feel effortless.
