Peppermint (Mentha Piperita Essential Oil)
What Is It
Peppermint essential oil comes from Mentha piperita, but one peppermint oil can smell quite different from another. The oil currently in our studio is a single-batch Oregon peppermint produced in collaboration with St. Hilaire Family Farms.
It opens with a clear, gentle mint and has a softer undertone that recalls chocolate. That depth gives it a character beyond the sharp freshness usually associated with peppermint.
The Benefits
Peppermint brings a sense of coolness and aromatic lift to rich compositions. A small amount can make a dense lip butter or beeswax balm feel brighter without changing the generous character of the butters and waxes beneath it.
Its effect also depends on what surrounds it. Alongside lanolin, its softer notes become more noticeable; with cedarwood, the mint feels grounded and earthy; with rosemary, it takes on a clearer, brisker character. This range makes peppermint useful to us as an aromatic material, not simply as a way to make something smell minty.
Why We Love It
Peppermint is a classic for good reason. Its freshness feels immediately at home in a balm, bringing brightness and a gentle sense of coolness to rich butters and waxes.
But we wanted a peppermint worth paying closer attention to. This single-batch oil comes from a specific Oregon harvest, produced in collaboration with St. Hilaire Family Farms. It has the clarity we love in peppermint, along with a softer, chocolate-like undertone that makes it distinctly its own. Choosing it reflects how we work: finding the best material we can for our compositions, then giving its particular character room to come through.
