What Is It

Papain is a natural enzyme derived from the papaya fruit (Carica papaya). Unlike sugar, salt, or other physical exfoliants, papain works by gently dissolving the bonds that hold dead skin cells to the surface.

This process—known as enzymatic exfoliation—allows papain to refine and renew the skin without relying solely on friction.

For delicate areas like the lips, that distinction matters.

The Benefits

Enzymatic Exfoliation: Papain helps break down and dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells, revealing softer, smoother skin without the friction of mechanical scrubs.

Surface Renewal: Encourages a fresher appearance by promoting gentle cell turnover—ideal for lips, cuticles, and delicate areas that need refinement without irritation.

Improved Absorption: By clearing away surface buildup, papain enhances the penetration of nourishing oils and butters applied afterward.

Soothing and Brightening: Naturally rich in antioxidants, papain also supports a more even tone while calming inflammation and reducing dullness.

Why We Love It

Papain offers a form of renewal that feels effortless—an enzymatic polish that pairs perfectly with the lush, oil-based compositions at the heart of our formulas.
